Therapeutic Yoga

My root teacher B.K.S. Iyengar believed that everybody, no matter what age or condition, could benefit from practicing Yoga. He understood that the body has its own integrity and through injury or bad habits this integrity gets disturbed and then creates symptoms. We need a balance of strength and flexibility and freedom. The joints do have a balanced, healthy body. Luckily in doing the dissection of a human body in my original courses as an Occupational Therapist helped me to understand his approach. My work with students who have chronic problems can be as simple as physical poses or as deep as self-inquiry.

In a 2010 interview with Iyengar Association of the North West,   I said all Iyengar Yoga is therapeutic. I call it Therapeutic Yoga when there is a major or long standing physical difficulty. This is when particular modifications need to be taught in a one-to-one setting. It is individualize instruction intended  to recreate the integrity of that joint or muscle.

You can contact me to ask Therapeutic Yoga questions. If possible send a diagnosis and a photograph showing your or your students physical challenge.  And it is possible to work one one one with me on Lopez Island.

How is it that one person can hold so many keys to the unlocking of the treasures within.

Success! Message received.

You counseled me to relax my solar plexus area during  Tadasana. You said it would change my life and it has. That awareness has led me on a quest for understanding in many areas of my life. My inward journey continues with deeper awareness and understanding, and I so appreciate your input.

Felicity, you always inspire me to continue on my own yogic path. I am honored to be part of your lineage. With great respect,
